During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
