Puzzling Magenta Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Coast Prompts Concerns of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation

Officials in Tasmania are striving to determine a pink slime that has appeared on a isolated coast, with certain experts anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Extensive Appearance On Beaches

The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a stretch of Randalls Bay about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been documented on parts of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.

A marine expert, who helped investigate the beginning of that event stated, based on photos of the current situation, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".

"We have seen lots of these events around Tassie of late," she added.

Coleman stated this organism did not create poisons comparable to the type involved in South Australia's severe algal bloom, but it does eat tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were particularly vulnerable.

"Typically one notices a proliferation of the organism after a proliferation of something else, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.

A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, stated it appeared the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and suggested the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, pointing to like situations overseas.

"Therefore Tasmania needs to issue a clear message here, the government and the regulators need to react to this. We need to study the examples we've gathered and we need to put word out the public here," she emphasized.

An environmental foundation has reported deceased sea creatures and dead sea cucumbers appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist describing the situation as an "natural disaster" and calling on the government head to visit and "lead the response that government must be doing".
