In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
