Defense Department Report Finds Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public later this week.
