Blues Boss Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Links as '100%' Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded recent reports linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the persistent speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in June 2024, has a contract running through the end of the decade, with a possible extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Strain Following Previous Remarks
Maresca's latest comments come after he referred to a previous two-day spell as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked widespread talk of a possible disagreement between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the club's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club next season and urged supporters to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an unhealed issue that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the matter publicly, there has equally been no apology offered, leaving the disagreement unaddressed.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has become increasingly awkward, raising fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a decent start to the season.
Chelsea's on-field position is positive: they are fourth in the league, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better Champions League draw with good results in their remaining games.
