A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

Several of other traders also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
